The Hump! Podcast Episode 33 Show Notes – Pandemic Purgatory

If You Missed The First Two Seasons

Miss the first season or so of The Hump! Show?

In Ep. 33 of The Hump! Podcast, Brent & Chad Chat Starting Season Three, Pandemic Life, & How They are Coping

What Craft Beers Are The Fellas Drinking?

  • Chad’s drinking a Clown Shoes Berry Blender IPA that a friend gave him. While the name might sound funny this can isn’t clowning around with a grim reaper design on the front.

  • Brent’s drink, a Voodoo Ranger 1985 IPA from New Belgium, is bringing similar vibes with a skeleton in a Hawaiian shirt. Both agree it is fitting with the topic of discussion today – the pandemic.

After a Year of Pandemic Life, the Fellas are Addressing some Serious COVID fatigue.

How have you dealt with the pandemic?

Chad talks about the slog that has been the last year. The weather hasn’t been helping either. In KC we’ve had some very cold weather this winter with multiple weeks not getting above 15 degrees. Brent’s car was stuck inside for that month and after the cold snap, it was, like a lot of us – not wanting to work. It was so cold dogs didn’t even want to go to the bathroom outside!

Where have you struggled?

As a social person, Chad can’t stand being stuck in his house all day. It is especially frustrating seeing others going out and about not doing their part. Chad’s been quarantining through this whole thing, only going to one coffee shop which is basically outdoors.

What are some of the different types of pandemic depression?

According to an article by Nature Magazine, the percentage of adults who had experienced depression at any point during the year jumped from 11% in 2019 to 42% during just the first few months of the pandemic.

Substance Abuse

At the start of the pandemic, it got so bad that the local news was warning people against alcohol consumption. The number of hospital cases involving people, as Brent says, “train recking their livers” was skyrocketing. However, alcohol companies have been loving the pandemic with their sales going through the roof!

On the flip side, Brent says his alcohol consumption has gone down if anything. However, Brent and Chad are both yearning for the days of hearing even a bad local singer on a brewery deck.

Working Too Much

Brent’s bugaboo in this pandemic has been working too much. As the boundaries that going into the office gave people are broken down, working from home is turning people into workaholics. However, Brent is taking on some fun new work that he genuinely enjoys doing in his free time. Some of these include reading books on podcasting and creating a course, as he became an adjunct professor this year! One silver lining of working/doing school from home is getting to actually have some family time during the week.

Video Games Linked to Lower Depression

This time last year Bubba Gaeddert was a guest on the podcast where the fellas talked about video games and there many benefits. Adding to that point there was a recent study that showed video games are linked to lower depression in boys.

It is a great way to have some fun inside whether it is freezing and/or there is a pandemic going on. However, Chad ponders on how much gaming is too much and if it is actually a healthy way to cope with Covid.

How to Cope with COVID…

Having a trip on the calendar is Chad’s favorite thing but with all his trips being canceled this year he is coping by replacing a trip – with the vaccine appointment. Brent asks Chad if his life will change after he has the vaccine. Chad replies that he doesn’t think so, however he is really looking forward to going to very small gatherings of people who have already been vaccinated.

This is very exciting considering the last year’s worth of socialization has been limited to the outdoors which was made almost impossible by freezing temperatures these last few months. However, Brent mentions a local news sports guy who watched every Chiefs game outside with his buddies even when it got to freezing temperatures! Now that it is getting nicer however Chad and Brent are looking forward to time by the pool. Being out in the nice weather is giving everyone a breath of fresh air (literally and figuratively).

Brent gives a quick update on his life. He has been going through some changes with a new house and his mother-in-law moving in with them. With how stressed they have been everything going on Brent’s wife Becca was asked by a housing vendor (a wood rot specialist of all people) – have you ever thought about meditation? Or, alternatively, marijuana?

For coping with the pandemic the fellas both suggest learning to entertain yourself, watching more comedies, and in general just adding more laughter into your life.  Brent mentions a post he saw on the website Next Door. (Screenshot of post) People are getting cheesed, and they are upset! It is no gouda!

And This Episode’s Game of “Triple D” …

To close out The Hump! Podcast … Brent and Chad play a quick round of Triple D.

What’s Triple D?

They throw out a scenario … and discuss whether it’s a DICK, DOUCHE or DUMBASS move …

This week’s Triple D move — What do you call someone who does donuts in the liquor store parking lot?”

Brent actually witnessed this happening a few weeks ago but both agree it’s a dumbass move if no one else is around. Brent suggests that particular case he saw was especially a hard dumbass move as the police station is just a quarter of a mile away from that liquor store! Chad concludes that it may move into douche territory if they are driving a Humvee. Chad also mentions that it’s shocking how many people there are at the liquor store at 9 a.m. on a Friday. Granted, he is one of them.

We discuss and debate on the show, but feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments (keep it clean folks, as they reserve the right to delete any personal attacks or defamatory information).
