Welcome to The Hump! Podcast …. In episode 30 of The Hump! Podcast: Calling Travel Audibles …  With vacations all but cancelled, hosts Brent Bowen and Chad Beland chat about alternatives including inflatable kayaks, RV trips and meccas to Winterfell. Sadly, a trek to Vancouver is no longer. But yes. You can rent Winterfell on AirBnB.

The fellas continue season two (safely from the confines of their respective homes using Squadcast.fm) chatting all things inane and profound (have you actually listened to the show).

And this episode’s Triple D: We call out people who don’t practice physical distancing… even if it’s part of their job.

The Hump! Podcast Episode 30 Show Notes – Calling Travel Audibles

If You Missed The First Season

Miss the first season or so of The Hump! Show?

In Ep. 30 of The Hump! Podcast, Brent & Chad Chat Cancelled Vacations, Travel Alternatives & More

What Craft Beers Are The Fellas Drinking?

  • Chad is drinking a Boulevard Tank 7 tall boy, recalling memories (or not) of Brent’s 40th birthday party.
  • While Brent keeps it light with a Logboat Mamoot (a regional favorite of previous guest and CoMo native, Jordan Nietzel).

As the Weather Clears Up & Places Begin Re-opening… When Will the Fellas Hit the Breweries Again?

Chad’s been “noodling it around,” but still isn’t quite there yet. He doesn’t want to go to the dentist and thinks it would be irresponsible to go to a brewery instead.

Meanwhile, Brent made a dentist trip the day they re-opened assuming it would be the most hygienic scenario. Chad makes it weird by bringing the word “taint” into the conversation.

Throwing it Back to Last Week’s Episode for Just a Moment …

The fellas joke about their ability to pull the podcast together each week despite somewhat-frequent technical difficulties.

Chad mentions getting complimented on last week’s episode with Jessie Jacob from
Professional AF. Not only was she an enjoyable guest, but the sound quality of the episode was impressive.

“We were really punching above our level on that one… we were lucky to get her.”

How Was Memorial Day Weekend?

Chad’s not sure whether it was COVID related or mid-life-crisis related, but he and his wife bought a boat. Actually, they bought two boats. Brent asks him to clarify… are they really boats? Chad assures that they are “sea-worthy vessels.” Though they could also be considered inflatable kayaks.

Brent ate pizza and drank a lot of beer. Beers and pizza with Chad, beers and burgers with other friends, beers and more burgers the next day. Plus yard work and a little bit of work. But mostly a lot of beer.

Not All Sports Have Been Cancelled …

Chad actually watched The Match (Champions for Charity) golf competition, and Brent can hardly believe it. Chad doesn’t like golf. He doesn’t like playing golf, and he certainly doesn’t like watching golf. But he did indeed watch The Match.

Brent proposes a live sport opportunity for Chad: real football.

Producer Grant shares information about the HSFL football league and is hopeful they’ll be able to play some games this summer. Right now, all they get to do is practice, and practice is kind of a bummer if you never actually get to play a game. Brent thinks they should livestream the games since people are desperate to watch live sports.

But Most Vacations and Summer Trips are Officially Off …

Brent’s family was planning a trip to Vancouver, and a side trip to Bowen Island (no relation) but it looks like international borders aren’t going to be open. Right now, only family and essential workers are allowed to go across.

Chad adds that the borders are scheduled to be closed until June 22, and then it’s up to Canada whether to extend. The fellas joke about the U.S. being the “Mexico” in this scenario, since Canada doesn’t want any Americans in the country right now. Can you blame them?

So, What’s Your Travel Audible?

Chad shares that he was thinking about renting an RV. It’s a good way to spend time with family, travel and stay somewhat isolated without having to get on a plane. But then it turned out that literally everyone else had the same idea, so RVs are currently booked out through July.

Brent is still hopeful his family is able to travel somewhere north… even if it’s not via RV. Even renting a big 70s-style van would work. Places to go, breweries to visit.

Meanwhile, Chad has already booked another trip, sans RV. He found an isolated cabin in Blue River, Colorado, which is near Breckenridge. It’s an Airbnb Plus… called Winterfell. Chad may or may not have thrown down the money just based on the name.

But the fellas agree it’s some sweet marketing. Brent ponders whether naming his house “Hogwarts” will make people want to pay money to stay there.

How Many Masks Do You Have?

Brent asks Chad how many masks he has to protect against the coronavirus. Chad says 14, but then clarifies it’s for his whole family, not just for him. Two are his. He prefers the ones that loop behind your ears rather than the ones that tie behind your head.

In Brent’s house, they have the masks you use when you paint your house. But one of Grant’s friends has been making masks — you just have to provide the fabric.

Chad even saw a KU-themed mask that had a hole for a straw… maybe not medically-secure, but still cool and somewhat functional?

Upcoming Guests Lined Up …

Video-game playing has spiked because of coronavirus. The fellas plan to have the Executive Director of the Varsity Esports Foundation, Bubba Gaeddart, on The Hump! in the next few weeks.

Also, Harvard grad and former Navy pilot Dan Bozung will be a podcast guest to chat his forthcoming book, This Civilian Sh*t Is Hard

And a future “Grab-Bag Guest” was Chad’s idea. This idea was dreamed up after several patio beers, as most good ideas are, and will consist of the producer booking a surprise guest for the show. And the hosts will just see how it plays out on air. Chad concedes that it sounded like a much better idea on his patio, but they’re willing to give it a try.

The Hump! Music Guest

No music guest this week, but be sure to check out singer-songwriter Nicole Springer on Ep. 28.

And This Episode’s Game of “Triple D” …

To close out The Hump! Podcast … Brent and Chad play a quick round of Triple D.

What’s Triple D?

They throw out a scenario … and discuss whether it’s a DICK, DOUCHE or DUMBASS move …

This week’s Triple D move — What do you call a door-to-door salesperson, especially in the era of physical distancing?”

We discuss and debate on the show, but feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments (keep it clean folks, as they reserve the right to delete any personal attacks or defamatory information).

You Can Catch The Hump! Live

You can watch Brent and Chad LIVE 7 p.m. CST most Wednesdays on Facebook  (and sometimes Instagram — when it works).

They’ll publish the replays on Facebook and places where good audio can be found (see below platforms — and not saying they’re good, but they’ll slum along greatness).
